Starting from the analysis and comparison between two areas at risk of abandonment which are the Cilento National Park in Italy and the Province of Soria in Spain, this paper aims to analyse what these two almost abandoned areas have in common, and what distinguishes them from one another, with so different morphology and environmental characteristics. The research investigates and confronts the historical and environmental reasons that have determined the urban layout of these two regions, and then concentrates on the different approaches that two Mediterranean countries such as Italy and Spain have to the common problem of depopulation of inland areas.
