In an agricultural economy the political establishment did not entirely support commercial concerns nor the mechanic arts. Locally, the interests of artisans and the merchant elite diverged. ☐ The hindrances to the growth of furniture shops receive attention as does craftsmen's self-perception. Despite numerous imports and a shortage of skilled tradesmen, adequate transportation, and liquid assets, these artisans upheld the traditional value of productive labor and developed a group identity.
