The purpose of this qualitative multiple-case research study was to explore the perceptions of government program managers regarding (a) the competencies program managers must develop to direct major defense acquisition programs, (b) professional opportunities supporting development of those competencies, (c) obstacles to developing the required competencies, and (d) factors other than the program manager's competencies that may influence acquisition program outcomes.
