Developing a Module to Equip a Select Group of Leaders with Expositional Skills at Bethel Metropolitan Baptist Church, Saint Petersburg, Florida

The director designed the ministry project with the idea of developing a module to equip a select group of leaders with an understanding of exposition and skills to approach the scripture expositionally at Bethel Metropolitan Baptist Church, Saint Petersburg, Florida. No prescribed methodology formally existed at the Church to help members with studying, preparing and listening to and applying God’s word to their lives and the lives of those in their spheres of influence. Meeting with and listening in on various ministry meetings gave additional rise to this concern. The director saw the need and witnessed an opportunity to further equip the members of Bethel Metropolitan for the work of the ministry. In learning and practicing the skills of expository preaching, the director sensed the prospect of instilling these skills in the congregation through developing and initially training the leaders. The project consisted of a curriculum and workshop designed and developed to impart understanding and skills associated with biblical exposition. The project director outlined three aims: equip participants with the meaning of exposition; furnish participants with skills to approach the scripture expositionally; and, refine the project director’s skills to approach scripture expositionally and learn of curriculum development and implementation. The workshop participants met over a seven-week period. The director administered identical pre-evaluation and post-evaluation workshop instruments for the purpose of collecting data, analysis and drawing conclusions. Across the group, knowledge gains surfaced in every area. The data indicates the workshop participants walked away with a significantly enhanced understanding of biblical exposition and associated skills. The prominence observed in the results shows the viability and suggest portability of the workshop to other leaders and to all members of the congregation
