A functional single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) C1858T in the protein tyrosine phosphatase nonreceptor 22 (PTPN22) gene encoding an intracellular phosphatase with negative regulatory effects on T-cell activation is associated with some autoimmune diseases in Caucasians.
