Level VII at the grotte du Renne, excavated by André Leroi-Gourhan in the 1950’s, has until now been the subject of only preliminary publications. This archaeological horizon contains the well preserved remains of several tightly superimposed Aurignacian occupations clearly distinguishable within the overall stratigraphic sequence. The present study focuses on a new look at the material recovered during the excavations as well as on a critical analysis of documents, sections, maps and photos, for the most part unpublished. The introduction provides an historical overview, placing the research in the scientific context of the time and re-stating Leroi-Gourhan ’s proposals concerning the layout of the space occupied by the Aurignacians.
