The coastal dunes of the Rhône delta (Camargue, France) are made up of relics of an extensive, former (Recent) littoral sand bar, and those that are being formed currently. The dunes are fairly modest formations of fine sand with groundwaters generally, closed to the surface. The groundwater dynamics are controlled by the interplay of water pressure in three superimposed and interdependent aquifers. At the bottom, there is seawater beneath a reservoir of more saline water. Above, there is a lens of freshwater supplied by rainfall.
