Senescence is a state of irreversible cell cycle arrest that arises in response to DNA damage and protects cells from neoplastic transformation. As a consequence, senescent cells accumulate in human tissues during ageing and exhibit a unique senescence- associated secretory phenotype or ‘SASP’.
