Background: When a child suffers from chronic illness, it affects the whole family. Type 1 diabetes in children is becoming more common and over 900 children in Sweden per year suffer from the disease. Self-care becomes a fact and parents have the greatest responsibility for nursing. There will be major changes in life and previous routines changed to new ones. The nurse has an important responsibility in supporting and guiding the parents in an individualized and appropriate manner.
