[EN] The article is about a popoluca teacher from Sayula and it analyses his work experiences in state and federal educational systems. Through his life history —that acquired a symbolic value— the text examines the project of the Casa del Estudiante Indígena (a special school for young indigenous people established in Mexico City in 1926), its ambiguities and contradictions. The everyday reality of education is analysed, estimating the distance between the expectations of a rural Indian teacher and his actual work in rural villages.
