University of Hawaii at Manoa 2011.Includes bibliographical references.A water quality model was developed to simulate the fate and transport of nutrients within the Ala Wai Canal and to evaluate the impacts of storm runoff on the canal's biological activity. The hydraulic component of the model was developed by considering the canal as a series of four completely stirred tank reactors (CSTRs), with flushing time as the key hydraulic parameter. Flushing time represents the average time that a particle of freshwater will remain in the estuary.
