This was a scene of almost daily occurrence during the Great War. France suffered terribly. Hundreds of villages were completely blotted out. Literally scarce one stone left standing upon another. None can comprehend how complete the destruction save those who have seen it with their own eyes. Even the village streets have in many instances disappeared, buried under a mass of ruins. Fragments of stone wall lie everywhere in confusion. Stucco has been ground to powder and covers everything like finely sifted snow. Tile roofs have been scattered to bits.
