History is remembrance and inheritance. The Muromachi period (1338-1573) of Japanese history is remembered by most historians as a time of chaos and internal conflict. A dynastic split early in the period and a civil war in the later years were the manifestations of gekokujo or "the low oppress the high," a term which has come to characterize the Muromachi period. Thus, one aspect of the Muromachi period is social change: new groups emerging into positions of influence and new power for existing groups. Yet, the Muromachi period was also an age rich in cultural achievements: poetry, landscape gardening, and painting.
