Over the past decade, services to prevent mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) have expanded rapidly, resulting in reductions in paediatric acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) worldwide.1 However, although an emerging literature demonstrates high maternal HIV incidence during pregnancy and breastfeeding,2 efforts have not focused as much on preventing new infections among pregnant women or their partners.
