The study of the molecular mechanisms of brain aging is an exciting but generally poorly understood field. Aging is a multifactorial process and gene expression of many molecules undergo age-related changes. Therefore, it is very important clinically, scientifically and societally to determine how the coordinated alterations of gene expression lead to cell degeneration. The hippocampus represents an ideal model to study the aging process, as it is one of the few brain regions showing early and severe age-related alterations.
