The excavations of burial mounds in Anciuliai in 1856 by L. Kondratowicz-Syrokomla

Burial mounds of the Eastern Lithuania have been investigated since the middle of the 19th century. Unfortunately, the majority of data of the earliest excavations is either scarcely published or lost entirely. One of the few burial mound cemeteries explored at that time and properly documented is Anciuliai (Oshmiany district, Byelorussia) near Tabariškės (Šalčininkai district). In 1856 excavations were carried out there by a member of the Archaeological Commission L. Kondratowicz-Syrokomla. The results of the survey have not been published, yet its brief account has survived and is presently kept at the library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences. In the earlier archaeological literature the cemetery is mentioned under two names - Anciuliai and Tabariškės. This is likely to be the result of a mistake which might have occurred during the correspondence between the author of the excavations and the Archaeological Commission. [...
