The purine biosynthesis pathway is a metabolic network conserved from prokaryotes to humans, ensuring ATP and GTP homeostasis. Purines can either be synthesized de novo, reused, or produced by interconversion of extant metabolites using the so-called recycling pathway. Moreover, intermediates can act as signal metabolites regulating gene expression. This pathway is well characterized in microorganisms such as heat or bacteria, but little is know about its regulation in metazoans.
