Evaluation de la technique d'aération afin de traiter les effluents d'élevage

The purpose of the study was to establish the limits of aeration as a method to improve manure handling to reduce such negative impacts. In other words, the objective is to set out when and in what role it is appropriate to use this type of treatment within the livestock industry. The thesis is based on the research carried out by the author during the period from 1990 to 2005 at the research centre Silsoe Recherche Institute, Bedford, United Kingdom and subsequently from 2005 to the present at Cemagref, Groupement de Rennes, France. Ten scientific publications of the author were selected to represent this work of which nine were refereed : the other is an extract from a reference book edited by the author. Aeration is the most efficient method to remove the organic load and thus the related offensive odours. An aerobic environment removes the smell by an oxidation process which converts virtually all the compounds responsible for the foul quality into harmless products such as carbon dioxide and water. A minimal treatment (one day) can remove the odorous compounds that are so unpleasant : however, to stabilise the effluent, so that it remains free of activity (or smell) during storage requires the more extensive treatment lasting 6 days. The implication here is a total removal of the BOD5 content which equates to the addition of definite volumes of oxygen irrespective of the means of aeration. The reaction kinetics for aeration are several times faster than those for anaerobic digestion: the heat often released and the presence of oxygen together lead to the rapid destruction of some pathogens. Aeration is the only method to remove ammonia without harmful consequence : the nitrogen is released in the form of di-nitrogen gas (N2). However, the nitrification mechanism (followed by an anoxic phase) can lead to large emissions of N2O, a major pollutant that is linked to global warming and, in addition, the breakdown of the ozone layer in the stratosphere. It is given off as much during an incomplete nitrification and possible by a third mechanism when the treatment time is less than 3 days (which inhibits the activity of the autotrophic nitrosomonas, the bacteria responsible for nitrification). Aerobic treatment enables easier sedimentation and thus the removal of phosphorous and insoluble heavy metals. Aeration technology is widespread when linked to all treatment of wastewater but it is hardly used for livestock wastes despite its proven efficiency. The main drawback is the implied cost which can not be reduced below a certain minimum for a given duty. The establishment of a precise treatment objective is often possible in terms of the reduction of the concentration of a given component such as the organic load or nitrogen concentration. This allows an objective comparison between several systems (or several means of operating the same system) and thus an optimisation. However, without financial aid, even a minimal cost often represents a too high percentage with respect to the value of the production from the farm.La production porcine entraîne des conséquences nuisibles pour l'environnement dont certaines sont bien identifiées, comme les émissions d'ammoniac et de gaz à effet de serre ou la pollution des eaux. Plusieurs filières de traitement ont été proposées pour limiter les pollutions émises par les effluents d'élevages. Parmi celles-ci, le traitement aérobie, couramment utilisé pour la dépollution des eaux urbaines, est une filière intéressante à explorer. L'objectif de cette étude est d'évaluer la pertinence de l'utilisation de la digestion aérobie lorsqu'elle est appliquée au traitement du lisier de porc. On a donc cherché à déterminer dans quelles conditions il était approprié d'appliquer ce type de traitement au secteur de l'élevage. Le travail de thèse est fondé sur les recherches effectuées par l'auteur de 1990 à 2005 au Silsoe Research Institute, centre de recherche situé à Bedford, au Royaume Uni, et, depuis 2005, au sein de l'unité GERE du Cemagref de Rennes. Dix publications ont été sélectionnées pour illustrer ces travaux, dont neuf avec comité de lecture. La 10e publication est extraite d'un livre de référence édité par l'auteur. L'aération représente le traitement le plus efficace pour éliminer la charge organique ainsi que les odeurs désagréables. L'oxydation convertit en effet la majeure partie des composés responsables des odeurs nauséabondes en sous-produits non odoriférants tels que le dioxyde de carbone et l'eau. Un traitement aérobie appliqué pendant un jour est déjà suffisant pour éliminer les odeurs issues des déjections animales mais le stockage de l'effluent pendant plusieurs semaines nécessite un traitement plus poussé d'une durée minimale de 5 à 6 jours. Le traitement aérobie, dont les cinétiques de dégradation sont plus rapides que celles de la digestion anaérobie, permet l'élimination totale de la teneur en demande biologique en oxygène sur cinq jours (DBO5) grâce à un apport spécifique en oxygène. La chaleur libérée et la présence d'oxygène peuvent conduire à une élimination rapide de certains pathogènes. Le traitement aérobie des effluents permet d'éliminer l'ammoniac sous forme de N2 grâce à l'alternance de phases aérobies et anoxiques. Cependant, le mécanisme de nitrification/dénitrification peut entraîner des émissions importantes de N2O, gaz associé à l'effet de serre et à la destruction de la couche d'ozone. Le N2O peut aussi être libéré lorsque la nitrification est incomplète ou lorsque le temps de séjour est inférieur à 3 jours ce qui limite la multiplication des bactéries nitrifiantes autotrophes à croissance lente (à l'exemple de Nitrosomonas). Le traitement aérobie facilite la décantation et ainsi l'élimination du phosphore et des métaux lourds insolubles. Malgré son efficacité, l'aération reste une filière de traitement marginale pour les effluents d'élevage, principalement en raison de son coût. Elle est pourtant particulièrement intéressante lorsque l'objectif est de réduire la charge organique ou la teneur en azote des effluents. Lorsque l'objectif est clairement identifié, il est possible de comparer plusieurs systèmes entre eux (ou plusieurs façons de gérer un même système) et donc d'optimiser la filière. Cependant, en l'absence de subventions, même avec un coût réduit, cette filière de traitement reste trop onéreuse pour la majorité des éleveurs
