Education, Discipline and Freedom: understanding discipline as man’s way of life and a possibility of living freely

This study focuses on “Education, Discipline and Freedom” and explores the concept of discipline as man’s way of life and discusses its possibilities within the current capitalist system, aiming to formulate a theoretical argumentation capable of turning “Education” into a viable tool that may overcome contradictions and social inequalities, and pointing to “discipline” as a possible path for man to attain freedom. It hypothesizes that discipline can be thought of as a way of life from an analysis of the works of Anton Semionovitch Makarenko, contextualizing the shaping of socialism and the rise of its pedagogy historically, outlining the concept of discipline as the goal of the whole educational process, with the norms and regulations that help to educate. The study ascertains that self-management activities cannot exist without discipline. Following, the current contributions of Makarenko’s discipline are mentioned, pointing to pedagogical aesthetics and the future happiness technique as ways of valuing culture in the shaping of human character and personality. In order to turn discipline into a way of life, the study shows the need to discipline one’s will so as to seek enlightenment, and states that honesty and responsibility allow for future happiness to occur now. This thesis draws the following conclusions: 1) Discipline seen as an end of the whole educational process and as a way of life is attainable and necessary for living a life of freedom; 2) The collective is understood as a place for human development; 3) The educator is responsible for the shaping of discipline and the collective.Este trabalho tem como tema “Educação, Disciplina e Liberdade”, investiga o conceito de disciplina como modo de ser do homem no mundo e procura fornecer subsídios para sua possibilidade no atual sistema capitalista. Tem por objetivo dar continuidade na formulação de uma argumentação teórica capaz de firmar a “Educação” como a maneira viável de ajudar na superação das contradições e desigualdades sociais, indicando o caminho da “disciplina” como possibilidade do homem viver no mundo em liberdade. Persegue a hipótese de que é possível a disciplina como modo de ser a partir de uma análise da obra do ucraniano Anton Semionovitch Makarenko e situa, no contexto histórico, a formação do socialismo e o surgimento de sua pedagogia. Descreve as linhas gerais do conceito de disciplina como a finalidade de todo o processo educativo e do regime, com suas normas e regras, que ajudam a educar. Constata que uma coletividade em autogestão não pode existir sem a disciplina. Em seguida procura situar as contribuições da disciplina makarenkiana para a atualidade, com a indicação da estética pedagógica e da técnica da felicidade futura como formas de valorizar a cultura na formação do caráter e da personalidade humana. Para tornar a disciplina modo de ser, aponta para a necessidade de disciplinar a vontade para buscar o esclarecimento e que a honestidade e a responsabilidade possibilitam tornar presente a felicidade futura. O trabalho chega às seguintes conclusões: 1) A disciplina como finalidade de todo o processo educativo, modo de ser, é viável e necessária para estabelecer a vida em liberdade; 2) A coletividade é entendida como o lugar do desenvolvimento humano; 3) O educador tem a missão de ser o responsável pela formação da disciplina e da coletividade
