Un luogo sacro e le sue trasformazioni: il santuario di San Matteo Apostolo sul Gargano

This article covers the history of the sanctuary of St. Matthew at San Marco in Lamis (Gargano, Apulia), dealing with the environmental and cultural context of its development. Hence, the different evolutive stages of this sacred place – originally a Benedictine abbey named after St. John – are here reconstructed: from the hypothetical Longobard origins, to the Benedictine phase (11th century) and the Cistercian times until the arrival of the Franciscans (16th century). A set of considerations is proposed on the significance of worship for St. Matthew and on the devotion to the tooth relic, which are investigated against the backdrop of the rural and pastoral context where these phenomena developed. The research finally shows how, and to which degree, the mediation of the Franciscans charged with new meanings both the interactions of this sacred place with the surrounding space and the relations with its inhabitants, especially the shepherds.L’articolo inquadra la storia del santuario di San Matteo a San Marco in Lamis (Gargano, Puglia) nel contesto ambientale e culturale in cui si è sviluppata. Sono ripercorse le fasi di vita di questo luogo sacro – in origine abbazia benedettina intitolata a San Giovanni – dalle ipotetiche origini longobarde, per le quali non sussistono documenti, all’epoca benedettina (XI secolo) e cistercense, fino all’arrivo dei Francescani (XVI secolo). Si riflette sul significato del culto per san Matteo e sulla devozione per la reliquia del dente nel contesto agro-pastorale in cui tali fenomeni si sono sviluppati; si evidenzia come, attraverso la mediazione dell’ordine religioso francescano, le interazioni di questo luogo sacro con lo spazio circostante e le relazioni con i suoi abitanti si siano caricate di significati nuovi
