Urbanization and increased agricultural activities are causing long-term changes to many of the key physical characteristics in coastal aquatic environments through increased sediment and nutrient loading, elevated turbidity and reduced light penetration. Inshore coral reef habitats and their associated species are vulnerable to sediment loading, which has been responsible for habitat degradation and a reduction in biodiversity of corals.
