Espacios de cultivo vinculados a Madînat Ṭurṭûša (Tortosa, Cataluña): norias, drenajes y campesinos (siglos VIII-XII)

This article discusses the farming areas of the Muslim city of Madînat Ṭurṭûša. For this, data gathered from the written records produced after the Christian conquest (1148) have been contrasted with the findings of archaeological surveys and the analysis of the landscape morphology. The main result is the boundary fixing and plan reconstruction of three farming areas around the city. On the northern side, the huerta of Pimpí was irrigated with wells and water wheels. The Arenes plain to the south was a wetland which received periodical floods, had drainage ditches, and was mainly used for cereal land and pasture. On the opposite bank of the river Ebro, there were further drainage canals and cereal farmland, the river’s water having never been conducted through ditches to irrigate large surfaces.En este artículo se estudian los espacios de cultivo relacionados con Madînat Ṭurṭûša. La investigación se basa en la contrastación de la información proporcionada por la documentación escrita generada a raíz de la conquista cristiana (1148), la prospección y el análisis del parcelario. El resultado ha sido la delimitación y reconstrucción en planta de tres espacios de cultivo adyacentes a la ciudad. La huerta de Pimpí, al norte, se regaba con el agua de pozos y norias. Al sur, las Arenes constituía un espacio de humedal afectado por inundaciones periódicas y estaba equipado con una red de acequias de drenaje; se destinaba preferentemente a pastos para el ganado y al cultivo de cereales. En la orilla opuesta del Ebro, también había canales de drenaje y zonas de cultivo de cereales. El agua del Ebro jamás fue captada ni distribuida mediante acequias destinadas a regar grandes superficies
