This article reflects on the anthropological, sociological and psychological background attributed by historians during the last twenty years to the history of emotions. The fieldwork findings of these disciplines have allowed historians to argue that emotions, or at least their expression, varies culturally. Using these as a reference, historians have been able to justify the historiographic study of emotions. Nevertheless, it is proposed that this relation to the social sciences impedes a more in-depth inquiry into the history of emotions and, specifically, its historiographic treatment.
