Abstract: Execution by garotte was a common punishing method in Spain until well into the 21st Century. This article will tackle the ways in which Spanish cinema has dealt with this thorny matter, first focusing on plotsbased on real facts. Attention will be paid to how some filmmakers used the esperpento heritage, the one-act farce and the astracanada as an attackagainst the death penalty.
