The vitamin D receptor (VDR) is the nuclear receptor for 1\alpha,25-dihydroxyvitamin D_3(1,25(OH)_2D_3), the active form of vitamin D. Classically involved in the regulation of calcium and phosphate homeostasis and bone mineralisation, 1,25(OH)_2D_3 has recently been demonstrated to suppress proliferation and promote differentiation in a number of cell types. This has led to the study of the 1,25(OH)_2D_3 pathway in malignancies such as melanoma and hyperproliferative disorders such as psoriasis.
