This thesis is concerned with the open magnetic flux content of the magnetosphere during the substorm cycle. We develop an automated technique of identifying the global location of the open/closed magnetic field line boundary (OCB) from auroral images of the ionospheric northern polar cap made by the IMAGE FUV detector, and hence of estimating the open magnetic flux content of any one hemisphere (Fpc). Systematic offsets are found between the location of the OCB as estimated from the auroral images and from in-situ measurements of precipitating particles consistent with previous studies.
