The Hemington Bridges formed an important medieval crossing point over the River Trent, carrying the King’s Highway linking Leicester and the south to Derby and northern England. This report presents the results of the excavations and multi-disciplinary investigations of three successive bridges found during quarrying operations between 1993–1998, and places the structures in their technological, geomorphological, environmental and historical contexts. The earliest bridge at Hemington, Bridge I, was constructed in the late 11th century and rebuilt in the early 12th century following a calamitous flood.
