[Extract] In the early 1990s, Hilde Steppe, a courageous German nurse, began publishing on the role that nurses played in Nazi-era Europe. Why was Steppe courageous? Because she was the first nurse to publicly acknowledge the complicit role members of the profession had in some of the worst crimes in history.
