The impact of mental illness within the Australian population has become increasingly apparent. The 2007 National Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing (SMHWB) conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics found that 1 in 5 Australians aged between 16 and 85 years experienced one or more of the common mental disorders in the 12 months prior to the survey (AIHW 2010). More than one quarter (26%) of people aged between 16-24 years experienced a mental health disorder in the preceding 12 months.
