This thesis is concerned with the processes of sociocultural\ud change set in motion when the Aboriginal people of\ud the Edward River reserve gave up their hunter-gatherer lifestyle\ud and joined with Anglican missionaries to form the\ud Edward River settlement in 1938. In opting for a sedentary\ud life, the Aborigines of the reserve were consciously adopting\ud the role of culture recipients who were dependent on change\ud agents (missionaries, and later government officials) from\ud the mainstream Australian society to provide the sources for\ud socio-cultural change as well as the direction in which it\ud should proceed.\ud \ud The cultural patterns characterising reserve life\ud prior to the establishment of the settlement are reconstr...
