The central concern of this paper is an examination of the degree entitled the PhD (Doctor of Philosophy). The history of this qualification, the criteria which candidates must meet to be awarded the degree and a consideration of the generic skills which are being developed to underpin the degree are examined. More generally, the argument is made that close attention has been paid to the technical and operational training of service oriented personnel in hospitality. Yet the education of the future industry leaders, including an analysis of the doctorate in tourism/hospitality, also deserves attention, especially in a world where strategic tourism and hospitality decisions are requiring more incisive analysis.
