Currently, discourses on Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) within Australia are in conflict. There are two dominant and conflicting knowledge bases: the biological and genetic approach, and the psychological approach, which includes behavioural and psychoanalytic theories on the cause of deviant or difficult behaviour. Other minor discourses also exist, including the diet perspective and an emerging strengths based discourse arising from support groups. The debate is not purely academic as theory, and the practice developed from that theory, have a huge impact on families.
