INSECTOS FITÓFAGOS ASOCIADOS A CULTIVOS DE HELICONIAS (Heliconia spp.) EN TABASCO, MÉXICO

ABSTRACT Objective: To identify the species of insects that feed and damage plants of the genus Heliconia (Heliconiaceae) in commercial plantations in the state of Tabasco, Mexico. Design/methodology/approach: From January to October 2013, three plantations located in the municipalities of Cardenas, Comalcalco and Teapa were visited biweekly to detect phytophagous insects. Results: Four species of insects belonging to three orders and three families were identified: Cephaloleia sallei (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) associated with H. psittacorum, Cephaloleia vicina (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) associated with H. latisphata, Pentalonia sp. (Hemiptera: Aphididae) associated with H. latisphata, and Telchin atymnius futilis (Lepidoptera: Castniidae) associated with H. psittacorum, H. bihai and H. stricta. Limitations/implications: Pentalonia sp. could not be registered at the species level. For this, a study is suggested that takes into account aphids of this genus also collected in banana plants (Musa spp.) and other hosts. Findings/conclusions: Few species of insects were found feeding or damaging cultivated heliconias; however, these insects are considered to have the potential to affect the crop or the product intended for cut flowers.RESUMEN Objetivo: Identificar las especies de insectos que se alimentan y dañan plantas del género Heliconia (Heliconiaceae) en plantaciones comerciales del estado de Tabasco, México. Diseño/metodología/aproximación: De enero a octubre de 2013 se visitaron quincenalmente tres plantaciones en los municipios de Cárdenas, Comalcalco y Teapa, para detectar insectos fitófagos. Resultados: Se identificaron cuatro especies de insectos pertenecientes a tres órdenes y tres familias: Cephaloleia sallei (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) asociada a H. psittacorum, Cephaloleia vicina (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) asociada a H. latisphata, Pentalonia sp. (Hemiptera: Aphididae) asociada a H. latisphata, y Telchin atymnius futilis (Lepidoptera: Castniidae) asociada a H. psittacorum, H. bihai y H. stricta. Limitaciones/implicaciones: Pentalonia sp. no se pudo registrar a nivel de especie. Para ello se sugiere un estudio que tome en cuenta áfidos de este género recolectados también en plantas de plátano (Musa spp.) y otras hospederas. Hallazgos/conclusiones: Fueron pocas las especies de insectos que se encontraron alimentándose o dañando heliconias cultivadas; sin embargo, se considera que estos insectos tienen potencial para afectar el cultivo o el producto destinado como flor de corte
