The aim of this paper is to contribute to the debate on evaluation in early childhood education from a survey of the Brazilian academic production in relation to the subject in the period between the years 1997 and 2012. This is on the assumption that the subject is hardly present in our academic production. The corpus of empirical research is limited to theses and dissertations registered on the platform of CAPES (Coordination of Improvement of Higher Education Personnel - the thesis database) and the journal articles included in the platform SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online).
