Predicting responses to acute hypoxia based on physiologic measures at sea level may be valuable in anticipating adverse responses to acute hypoxia. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between heart rate variability (HRV) and arterial oxygen desaturation in response to acute hypoxia exposure at rest and during exercise. METHODS: 13 subjects (6 male, 7 female) aged 20.6±0.3 years rested in a supine position for 10 min after steady state respiration was achieved.
