This paper reports on the design and construction of a model residential building in Yankatsari village near Kano, using alternative building materials developed at the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute, Lagos. The house was designed to reflect the socio-cultural living patterns of the people. Based on feedback from the project, the design has been reviewed to include simplification of design; segregation of animal and human traffic; reduction of built up area and introduction of ventilated improved pit latrine
