This book collects systematically, examines critically and presents prosopographically, for the first time, all ethnic terminology applied to specific individuals in the Greek, Latin, Demotic and hieroglyphic Middle Egyptian evidence (papyrological, epigraphic and ancient historiographic) from or referring to Hellenistic Egypt, published up to the end of 2000. Consequently, it provides a crucial basis for research into ethnicity and related problems, as well as key areas of the society, law and culture of Hellenistic and early Roman Egypt. It is, therefore, a fundamental reference work for historians of Egypt in these periods. It has been widely cited, most recently in the Lexicon of Greek Personal Names, Vol. IV (Oxford 2005)
