The behaviour of a welded cruciform joint under static loads was simulated using the finite element method (FEM). The geometry, material properties and loading conditions of the joint were identical to those of a specimen for which experimental results were available so that the FEM model could be validated. The effects of varying weld geometry and material properties on the developing strain and stress distributions were studied using the validated model
