Auditory cortex is essential for normal sound localization behavior. Reversible inactivation of primary auditory area (A1), dorsal zone (DZ) or posterior auditory field (PAF) in cats produces varying types and degrees of localization deficits. However, previous physiological studies in anesthetized animals have demonstrated rather small differences in spatial sensitivity across cortical fields. In the current study we characterized the auditory spatial sensitivity of neurons in A1, DZ and PAF in awake animals and investigated the influence of the attentional state on the spatial receptive fields.
