International audienceThis paper investigates mood choice in Finnish concessive clauses, with regard to the evolution of the element vaikka from particle to concessive conjunction (‘[al]though’, ‘even if’). Concessive relation has been defined as one entailing two mutually incompatible events that both take place. Yet, concessive vaikka clauses contain, not only the indicative, but also the conditional and jussive moods, coding non-factual and virtual events. We argue that jussive clauses expressing permission and including the space builder vaikka are a source for concessive constructions in Finnish. After vaikka itself was reanalyzed as a concessive marker, the jussive could be replaced by the indicative and conditional moods, determining...
