International audienceKnown after nearly a century of Soviet research, the Early Iron Age “handmade painted ware cultures” which occupied southern Central Asia during the second half of the 2nd millennium BC have been studied in depth for twenty years by French teams working in Central Asia. Excavations in Koktepe by the MAFOuz of Sogdiana and in Dzharkutan by the MAFOuz–Protohistory in Uzbekistan, as well as excavations in Ulug depe in Turkmenistan by the MAFTur, have uncovered a number of buildings and material culture assemblages.
