The wide phenotypic variability of some algal species and the lack of diagnostic characters render the systematic study of this group problematic. Some species are consequently often misidentified. In the past three decades, molecular techniques have been used to resolve many taxonomic problems and to reassess the global diversity of seaweeds. DNA nucleotide sequence analyses of different DNA regions have been used to infer phylogenetic relationships at the species level. Meanwhile, population genetic markers have been used to estimate gene flow between populations.
