The osteocyte system has raised increasing interest in the recent years, since it is hypothesized to play an important role in orchestrating bone adaptation through mechanosensation and bone mechanotransduction mechanism. The osteocytes are deeply buried within the bone matrix, where their bodies are encysted in cavities called lacunae and their stellular processes are enclosed in tunnels called canaliculi. Together, they formed the lacuno-canalicular network (LCN).
