Since the diachronic development of tone in Vietic followed the same overall pattern, tone categories are expected to show regular correspondences. Yet there are many cases where certain words in one of the languages (or in a group of languages) do not carry the tone that is expected in view of the regular historical-phonetic laws. These irregular tone correspondences constitute a real issue, which the linguist needs to address. Three types of irregular correspondences are examined.
