Debates regarding the profound rise of urban poverty renewed interest in the influence of neighborhood environments on the lives of individuals by focusing attention on the structural constraints neighborhood environments impose on residents. This renewed interest has led to the expansion in both volume and diversity of outcomes researchers have examined for associations with neighborhood context. As this research has expanded, however, insufficient attention has been focused on characterizing the nature and specific aspects of neighborhood environments thought to influence individuals.
