Electron microscopy was used to study the decomposition of the ? phase in rapidly solidified titanium-eutectoid alloys. During rapid quenching martensitic and eutectoid transformations were evident. Analysis results of these transformations were found to be in good agreement with a model recently proposed for the evolution of bainite and pearlite structures during the solid-state transformations of some titanium-eutectoid alloys. The evolution of the Ti2Cu phase during rapid quenching involve the formation of a metastable phase. The lamellar intermetallic compound Ti2Cu evolved by a sympathetic nucleation process. Finally, evidence was established for the sympathetic nucleation of the proeutectoid a crystals formed during rapid quenching
