The vertebrate hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal/interrenal (HPA/HPI) axis plays a central role in integrating the stress response and maintaining homeostasis. My dissertation research focused on understanding the regulatory mechanisms of the key regulator of the stress axis, the corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF). I took a comparative/evolutionary approach to this problem, and utilized the South African clawed frog Xenopus laevis as a model system. I found that the general distribution of CRF expression in the frog brain are highly conserved with other vertebrates.
