It is stated by Gill (1910) that cottids were once worn around the necks of Russian peasants as charms to ward off fevers. Its viewed importance has evolved considerably since its common name was ""blob"", a poor excuse for a fish and the culprint of the destruction of trout and salmon eggs. Today it is known that sculpins are an integral part of the trophic structure of trout streams and that they serve as an indicator of clean cool water, suitable for the likes of brrok trout and brown trout, two popular sport fishes. Changes in pigmentation are used by this bottom-dweller to avoid its trout predators and to ambush benthic invertebrate prey. Camoflage may be its key to survival.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/54277/1/2...
