Built heritage preservation - a contribution to understanding of metodology

The graduation thesis deals with the renovation of architectural heritage. History of conservation from its beginnings to modern international charters and conventions is presented. An overview of legislation and regulation regarding built heritage preservation in selected European countries is made. The thesis then presents the conservation theory and describes the methodology of conservation treatment with an emphasis on the values assessment procedures. Selected methods for the evaluation of the state of conservation of buildings are described. EU-CHIC – European Cultural Heritage Identity Card project\ud is presented, including the risks to architectural heritage, defined by this project. All environmental and\ud anthropogenic-social risks are described and illustrated with examples. Costs of renovation usually exceed available funding, therefore eligible buildings must be selected and ranked by priority. A multicriteria method for the assessment of architectural heritage is used and a research undertaken amongst students in relevant study fields to determine the relative importance of individual criteria, used for evaluation of architectural heritage values.
