International audienceThis study about the society of Martinique during the slavery period is trying to identify what was expected from godfathers and godmothers and to understand the way they were selected. The relations between the godchild and his godparents were close and lasting ones. Not only did they contribute to the evangelization of the slavish population but also to fill in the gap of the relations deficit caused by the instability of the family, especially for slaves and some free coloured people.
